RIOS DAIRY BREED – WATUSI CATTLE

Rios Dairy Breed

In 1999, while we were still on our farm in New York, my sisters and I initiated work on a new breed of dairy cattle that would live longer and have fewer health problems than traditional breeds. Our idea was to cross breeds resistant to disease and heat, such as Texas Longhorn and African Watusi, with German Red Angler, a dairy breed developed for longevity and high milk quality. The cross breeding would include tapping into the superior milk genetics of Holstiens from our own herd, selected for health and high milkfat. We had just begun the project when we planned the move to Costa Rica.

  1. Hi, I was just admiring your project. I would like to know if your calves are grain fed or weed fed, as we believe this would make a difference in our nutrition.
    Regards,
    Melissa
